2023 Water Monitoring Volunteers Needed

The Yoho Lake Water Monitoring Committee is looking for volunteers! Please see the following message from Dinah Stocker:

A group of volunteers monitor the quality of Yoho Lake water each summer in conjunction with several
other lakes, YLA and the New Brunswick Lakes Association. We take measurements such as water
clarity, pH levels, temperature, etc., at 4 specific coordinates on the lake. This way we can tell how well
the lake can support fish, plants, birds, “our loons,” and so on. A “team” of monitors go out every
second week and anticipate starting this year in mid-June.

We are looking for 4 volunteers, two people with boats and two additional people as monitors. We will
have an experienced monitor “team up” with new volunteers. No experience is necessary just interest.
The time commitment is a spring training/meeting; 2 “measurement sessions” (one July, one August)
that take about 1-1.5 hours each and a final fall debriefing meeting.

To volunteer or for questions please contact Dinah Stocker at either 506-470-4608 (text or call) or email: bigdogz@bellaliant.net

NBALA Presents: Living by the Lake on Feb 25, 2023

Please see the following invitation from the New Brunswick Alliance of Lake Associations (NBALA):

The New Brunswick Alliance of Lake Associations will be holding the biennial conference on lake health on February 25, 2023 (10 am to 12:30; ZOOM). The theme this year is “Living by the Lake”. The challenge of living by the lake is to find a balance between enjoying the natural beauty and recreational opportunities while also protecting the fragile ecosystem of the lake. Whether a property owner is new to lake living or a generational cottage/home owner, we need to create an understanding that all human activity has the potential to impact lake health and this is amplified by the increase in water temperature secondary to climate change. Topics to be explored will include understanding water quality monitoring in relation to lake health; impact of development on shoreline management/remediation; protecting the role of wetlands in promoting biodiversity; and the impact of recreational activity on aquatic wildlife. A detailed program will be provided once speakers are confirmed.

For more information, watch this post for updates or contact Lee Penney at NBALA.

Cyanobacteria, otherwise known as blue-green algae, is present in nearly every water body in North America. It is important to err on the side of caution when it comes to protecting people and pets from the toxins that may be produced.
NBALA: Blue-Green Algae Reporting Procedures

Please read the following message from the NB Alliance of Lake Associations (NBALA):

To NBALA members

Now that the hot weather has arrived, it is particularly critical that we keep an eye open for signs of blue green algae blooms which can potentially be toxic to humans and pets. If a bloom is suspected at your lake, use the protocol outlined below to report it to the Department of Environment and Local Government (DELG).

Contact your lake association who will contact tje DELG Regional Office to notify them of the bloom and send DELG the completed bloom screening questionnaire found at http://www2.gnb.ca/content/dam/gnb/Departments/env/pdf/Water-Eau/Algae-Algues/AlgaeQuestionnaire.pdf).

DELG will then notify the respective Regional Medical Officer of Health and the Dept. of Justice and Public Safety Regional Office (Public Health Inspectors are now under this Dept) that an algae bloom has been reported for their followup.

More infomation about blooms can be found at https://www2.gnb.ca/content/gnb/en/departments/ocmoh/healthy_environments/content/blue_green_algae.html This message will be posted on the NBALA Facebook page to be shared with individual lake associations.

Sheryl Bartlett
Chair, NBALA

Please read the following message from Bonny Hoyt-Hallet on behalf of the Water Monitoring team:

As some of you may have noticed on a previous post there has been some observations of a potential algae bloom along the Yoho road lakeshore edge.

Each of you had or will be receiving a package this week containing info on keeping our lake healthy,
In this is a document outlining information on algae blooms and what to do or not do.

With each bloom and this will not be the only one, we will not be sampling each one. Residents should notify the monitoring committee and myself as chair, of the location and observation, so we can keep a watchful eye and notify residents to be cautious.

We must assume that each is blue green algae and toxic and avoid the area for swimming / drinking and use by animals in the area of the bloom.

So far we have been lucky and these blooms are short lived and dissipate quickly. There is no facility in NB at present to test for toxins in blue green algae but work is ongoing through NBALA / UNB and RPC. All blue green algae is not toxic but for the sake of caution we must treat it as if it were.

Our lake has been posted as of last year as a result of that algae bloom. It is posted at the only semi public entrance to our lake that being the scout camp, these signs stay in place once a lake has been identified.

DELG and Public safety will not test each bloom so it is our role to do what we can to prevent blooms and be cautious when we see one and report it to your lake Executive or Monitoring Committee.
The lake is being monitored every 2 weeks and is warm and low right now and susceptible to blooms.

Bonny Hoyt-Hallett
Chair Yoho lake monitoring committee

For more information, please refer to the government website on blue-green algae.

Another note from Briana Cowie at the NB Alliance of Lake Associations:

Hi everyone,

Hope you are all staying safe & well. I am sending out this Call for Proposals for all NBALA lake association members to circulate. We would like to see more youth involved in our local lake associations and environmental efforts so we have created an opportunity for young people to contribute a creative design project that involves maintaining lake health.

The details are enclosed in the attached document. We ask that you share this widely on your social media, at your dinner tables, and with your friends & family. We will select 5 project proposals and individuals who are chosen will be provided compensation in exchange for their design as a part of our “Youth Ambassadorship” program. Interested individuals are asked to contact me by February 5th with their project ideas.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Let’s think of creative ways to get youth thinking about environmental management!

Thanks everyone.

Take care,

Briana

Here is more information about the Call for Proposals.

Blue Green Algae Confirmation

The result of the water sample taken at the Scout Camp last week has been received and confirmed as Blue Green Algae.

We have attached an update from the Department of Health confirming that Blue Green Algae was detected in water samples taken at the lake last week. Please read more here: AlgaeSheet.pdf

Update: We have reached out to the Department of Health for more information, as many of our residents are expressing their concern and are looking for guidance. At this time we only have the sheet that they have provided as official information.

Update #2: Bonny Hoyt-Hallett wanted to add some further clarifying language:

As you know the sample of the algae bloom from the Scout Camp was sent away to Quebec for testing. They did a microscopic exam and determined it was a blue green algae bloom. As you are aware some types of blue-green algae are capable of producing toxins. This bloom was not tested for toxins but we treat all blooms as potentially toxic. Please refer to the question and answer sheet provided in the welcome package or on the websites referenced for further information regarding usage / cautions.

You will see that the references are related to the bloom area itself and being cautious as we enter the water, as blooms can move with wind shifts or can completely dissipate.

I have contacted RPC to encourage them to move forward with local testing including genetic testing. They have been considering this and my contact was well received .

Again, please review the material from the websites and govern yourself as you are comfortable.

Bonny Hoyt-Hallett

Blue-Green Algae Sightings

On Friday, July 10, 2020, some pictures were shared on Facebook which appear to show a bloom of blue-green algae by the Scouts Canada Lodge. The New Brunswick Department of Environment has visited the site to take samples that will be sent to a laboratory in Quebec for chemical analysis in order to determine what is present in the water and whether it poses a danger to users of the lake. The hope is that results will be returned by mid-week, next week.

The province has made available some general safety information about Blue-Green Algae on their website: https://www2.gnb.ca/content/gnb/en/departments/ocmoh/healthy_environments/content/blue_green_algae.html. Please educate yourself by following the above link; we have provided some safety information below as well.

Some blue-green algae can produce toxins, which can cause skin, eye and throat irritation. More serious health effects such as gastrointestinal illness can occur if toxins are consumed.

Public Health recommends the safety advice below for all recreational water bodies including the ones with advisories. Its important to remember that just because you don’t see it in the area your swimming, it doesn’t mean its not present elsewhere. Our safety advice is primarily targeted at humans, for animal specific information, please talk to your veterinarian.

Safety advice includes:

Always check the water before entering and avoid using the water if algae is present

Do not swallow lake or river water when swimming, and always supervise young children and pets in recreational waters.

Bathe or shower immediately after swimming.

Do not enter the water with open cuts or sores.

Do not use water from areas with blue-green algae blooms for drinking or cooking. Boiling the water will not remove toxins. Always obtain drinking water from a clean and safe source.

Fish caught from water where algae are present should have all their organs removed and be rinsed well with clean drinking water before being cooked and eaten.

Even if no algae are present, it is recommended you shower with clean water after being in recreational waters.

We received a request for participants in a survey for a program intended to assist in shoreline restoration. Please see below:

Development impacts (e.g., habitat loss, pollution) are affecting the health of and ecological services provided by shorelines across Atlantic Canada. Fortunately, there are science-based tools and best practices to help minimize the impacts of new developments and restore shoreline ecosystems of previously-developed sites.

Plans are underway to customize the BC-based Green Shores® program to Atlantic Canada so waterfront owners can better enjoy their property and organizations working on shorelines can make better decisions.
If you are a waterfront property owner or an individual working on shorelines we’d like to hear from you! By participating in a short survey you can help bring shore-friendly solutions to Atlantic Canada. Be sure to complete the survey by February 28, 2020.

Waterfront property owners, click on this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Greenshores_Owners
Individuals / organizations working on shorelines, click on this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Greenshores_Organizations

Thank you in advance for sharing your views.
